Every single chinchilla out there has its own unique way of doing things. Some chinchillas barely even act like a chin while others are the textbook example of one. Your own pet will have it’s on the personality that unlike any other chinchilla out there, you just need to give it time to develop.
Generally, the personality of a chin will begin to show a few weeks after they are born. Skiddish babies tend to grow into shy adults, and outgoing babies tend to be adventurous to old age. You can even tell how athletic or lazy a chinchilla is going to be as they start to grow up.

Tips on how to pick the perfect Chinchilla name
Picking the perfect name can be a hassle if you don’t yet know the personality of your pet. Even worse is when you have already decided on a name and it doesn’t match up with your chins personality. In this case, you may scramble to come up with a new name.
Before deciding on a name wait until you pick your chinchilla up. Once you have spent a little bit of time with your new chin you should start to have a grasp on their overall personality. It’s ok to wait a few days to officially decide on a name they will be keeping it for life after all.
Remember that chinchilla can and will learn their names. It’s best to pick something that will stick. In the case of adopting a chin that is already named, you can rename them. Keep in mind that renaming a rehomed chinchilla may take longer as they will have to get used to change.
If your chinchilla doesn’t seem to respond to their name try shorting it. Make sure the title isn’t too long or have tons of syllables. The general rule is to name your pet a name with 3- 4 syllables at max to avoid any mix-ups and have them remember it quicker.
The names of my Chinchillas
Teddy Bear was my first chinchilla and the most cuddly or of my trio. She was always ready to come out of the cage and sit on your lap and would come right up to your hands. When she was in her cage she would follow you around the room and sit as close as her cage would allow her.
My second chinchilla was Chin Chin. She was a special needs chin who was only born with three legs, but she was full of life and hyper. Because of her quirky funny nature, I named her as a pun on the word chinchilla. It was also a requirement that you say her voice in an excited tone.
Onyx was the last chinchilla I adopted and was a rehoming. She was a beautiful black color and was incredibly bashful to strangers. Despite being bashful whenever she got to know you she would happily hop over to you as gracefully as possible and beg you for attention.
Onyx was the toughest to name out of the three since she was previously owned. It took her around 2 months to figure out who I was talking to out. With the help of treat training and one on one play time, Onyx eventually learned to recognize her name.
Each of my chins was named about a day after I had them settled into their new home. They all had varying personalities, but each one was named with care. No matter what name you choose for your chin make sure it’s one that will stick and you put a good amount of thought in.
One of the biggest things that can change in a young chinchilla’s personality how much they like people. The more a chinchilla is socialized the more it will become accustomed to you. While this isn’t true for every chinchilla many grow to like people or at least the ones that feed them.
Final Thoughts
The environment your chin lives in can also mold them. Chinchillas who have been hand raised will be friendlier then chins who have had little to no interaction. Rehomed chins are pretty much a mixed bag unless you know the person who previously owned them well.
You should also note that some chinchillas are more vocal than others. These chinchillas will sit around talking to each other. In fact, some chinchillas barely ever make noise unless they feel like they are in danger.
